Remote Work Salary Analysis
This weekend for fun I took the data from a remote work platform and create pivot tables 😶📈.
The data come from Remotive.io (free backlink they will be happy). Their founder asked hundreds of remote workers to share their salary & benefits. It was a bit a mess in the Google Sheet. So, I cleaned up the data, and I came up with graphics.
NB
- Those are just average salaries. It’s hard to compare the wealthiness in different countries. A Belgian can earn less than an American but still have a better life (free education, fewer debts, health care).
- To clean the data, I destroyed a lot, rounded up etc.
- Those salaries can shock some of you. You can even feel a kind of injustice. Don’t forget that tech jobs nowadays are trendy and on demand. Those remote jobs are not inaccessible. Nowadays knowledge is free.
⚔ Some discoveries about Remote Work Salary ⚔
➡ Remote workers earn 2x times more than the median salary in their country.
Remote workers from Estonia, US, Canada are paid the most (around 105k $ per year). Why Estonia? Those are certainly entrepreneurs who play with tax optimization. If you don’t know this European trick. I invite you to check Google or any entrepreneurs Facebook groups.
Twice the median salary? In Belgium, the median annual salary is around 35k $. Our remote Belgians earn around 60k $.
➡ 50 hours/week workers earn almost the same than 20 hours/week workers.
Was Tim Ferris, right? The new rich are those who can work 20 hours a week and earn largely enough. With remote workers, this tendency is clear.
We come back to the principles of Cal Newport: Deep Work. It’s not because you work every day 2 more hours that you end up being more productive…
➡ There are still disparities between men and women.
Once again be careful because there were only 400 respondents… Two female Indians were copywriters, they earn around 2500 $ a year. White & Asian men earn the most.
➡ Developers, designers, marketers earn almost the same.
The gap between jobs isn’t that high. I’m impressed because I thought developers were the divas in the job market 👯♂️ ️. Engineers still win the game.
➡ I need to increase my prices…
In 2019, I earned around 32K $. The average salary in my sector is 2.3 times more. I need seriously to reconsider my pricing…
In orange, it’s the job corresponding to my skills. In yellow, it’s the dream salary for growth marketing .

To recreate this experience on your job category: download the Excel file, insert a pivot table and play.
➡ If you work as digital nomad, it doesn’t influence your salary.
It seems that there are not a lot of disparities between nomads and remote home worker. Pleased to learn that!

Conclusion about remote work
As you can see, remote work is not for home-stay mothers who have a lifestyle blog and Pinterest page… Today those jobs are very technical and with a high income.
I feel bad when I know that so many people commute every day for 4,6 hours. They sacrifice their families, hobbies and friends for their job.
Remote work is not the only solution to make employees happier, but it’s a good step forward. The trend will amplify with the new generation of startups.
Danger? ☣
Citizens complained about the massive factories outsourcing. Could you imagine if even a software engineer, a designer, an architect is outsourced in cheaper countries? In the data from Remotive, Indians have high-skilled jobs for westerner companies.
